It's no wonder that many former guitar rockers like Peter White, Jeff Golub, and Craig Chaquico are succeeding in smooth jazz. They have a sharp, alluring energy to their smooth jazz licks and rhythm playing that's filtered through years of generating the manic energy needed for arena rock. This former Jefferson Starship member may be the most tasteful of the three, for in addition to highly charged tracks like 'Innocent Kiss' and 'Café Carnival,' Chaquico has seemingly mastered the ... Perhaps not as pretty as previous studio releases, Krishna Das's Breath of the Heart nevertheless captures the ecstasy, devotion, and life-affirming qualities of chant. Ably abetted by rap and rock producer Rick Rubin, Das joins with a choir dubbed the Kosmic Kirtan Posse, featuring the East and West Coast Posses, a group of some 50 members including Mike D of the Beastie Boys, while instruments as diverse as harmonium, Hammond B3 organ, violin, guitar, cymbals, and drums play ... Mixing a variety of styles with a Celtic base, this was McKennitt's breakthrough album and remains one of her most musically interesting. 'All Souls Night' begins the album, with dance-like rhythms and McKennitt's wonderful voice singing about the Celtic New Year. Other features include a musical setting of Tennyson's 'Lady of Shalott', which, while not as sophisticated as Noyes' 'The Highwayman' on The Book of Secrets, is an enchanting listen. There's also an interesting rendition of ... Regular Price : $17.98

McKennitt's travels through Spain and Morocco flavor this album with a distinctly Mediterranean tinge, from the opening 'The Mystic's Dream,' with its dancing percussion arrangements, to 'Marrakesh Night Market,' to 'Full Circle' and the instrumental 'Santiago.' 'Marrakesh Night Market' is an especially strong performance, with an interesting musical texture; the balalaika, udu drum, and dumbek are played alongside a synthesizer. As usual, McKennitt has set a poem to music, this time Yeats's 'The Two Trees,' with a lovely ... Regular Price : $17.98

German-born vocalist Deva Premal has the voice all singers aspire to: pure and warmly resonant, with perfect enunciation.
This CD is delicate and pleasing. The instrumentation is light. Deva Premal's voice is pure, fluid, and joyful, though not as 'passionate' as the cover art might suggest.
Track 6 is a standout. It is mostly instrumental, with a light, jazzy texture, and for Deva it is evocative of a rainforest retreat she and her partner attended. It ... Regular Price : $16.99

Created, it would seem, as a special-occasion soundtrack for love-struck dreamers, the eighth career recording from Jim Brickman is a rewarding collection of eight instrumentals and four vocal tracks--one that will especially be appreciated by the pianist's longer-term fans. Beyond the sentimental excess of a couple of vocal tracks, the disc's affecting piano solos (most with minimal or no accompaniment) compare favorably with works found on Brickman's esteemed early-career releases, No Words, By Heart, and Picture This. I was lucky enough to see Acoustic Alchemy perform live one Friday in 1995 and I was blown away. This album was the one I purchased that very night at their concert (by Sunday night I owned every CD they'd released). 'Homecoming' was the first song of the first set and still makes me smile. I think that 'Lullaby for the first born' is the finest of all the Webb/Carmichael two handers. There's not a bad track on here.

Two things will stick out after you hear this compilation album by DJ and producer Mr. Scruff: crisp drums and fish songs. The fourteen tunes here are mostly fun, sprightly numbers with some odds and ends thrown in, like a ballad or two. You've probably heard of Mr. Scruff from his hit 'Get a Move On,' a hopelessly catchy number and #5 on my top songs of 1999 (and featured in a prominent ... Regular Price : $15.98

The Back to Mine series has already provided some memorable compilations from a diverse collection of dance luminaries, including Morcheeba, MJ Cole, Groove Armada, and Talvin Singh. Now, famous brothers-in-rhythm Paul and Phil Hartnoll, a.k.a. Orbital, offer up a selection of tunes that lie close to their hearts and get their heads bopping. Their effort is indulgently deep and impressively broad, and it's certainly one of the series' most eclectic offerings yet. Starting with John ... Regular Price : $17.98

Featuring the soothing narration of Deepak Chopra over the trancelike music of Adam Plack, The Soul of Healing Meditations serves as an introduction to meditation for neophytes and as a more advanced tool to help overcome a physical ailment and/or emotional toxicity. That may make it sound like a digital elixir, but as Chopra says in his liner notes: 'We like to tell our patients (at the Chopra Center for Well Being) that the body is ... Regular Price : $17.98
