'Flower Drum Song' has been somewhat forgotten over the years, and its score remains one of their most underrated. The current, thoroughly revised Broadway revival has some notable scripting problems, and it left me with the overall feeling that I wished the production was a might bit better. However, the score itself is ravishingly performed, both on stage and on this CD, and the voices of Lea Salonga and Jose Llana lend might and beauty to gorgeous new arrangements. While some of the songs in this score haven't aged quite well, in particular 'Chop Suey' and the pre-feminist 'I Enjoy Being a Girl', they are given a sense of fun and urgency that saves them from the relic bin. However, it's the ballads and love songs that put this show over and make it worth savoring. Lea Salonga, in particular, does her regal best with 'A Hundred Million Miracles' and 'I Am Going to Like it Here'. And 'Love Look Away', formerly a ballad for a character now written out of the show, is now cast as a duet for Salonga and Jose Llana, and its exquisite. Llana also does a terrific job on 'You Are Beautiful' and 'Like a God', which is probably the best song in a powerful score. Overall, this is a marvelous rediscovery of a classic Rodgers and Hammerstein score that deserves reconsideration.
