I had been expecting this release for a few months now and I love it and hate it. Here's why. On this album they have furthered themselves musically in some respects however my biggest complaint with the CD is 1.) there is more techno-trance-hip-hop beats than ever before and 2.) whoever mixed this CD needs to find a new job. With bond's first album, Born, you certainly realized that these 4 ladies playing strings are in the 'front.' With Shine, they are lost in the mix. Relying to much on accompaniment, and laying the effects on the 2 violins, viola and cello pretty heavy, it is very difficult at times to hear them and therefore truly enjoy their playing. (Please hire a new engineer!) On Born you got a real sense of their mastery of their instruments - their personalities embedded in their performances. On Shine, you won't get that. It's definitely an ensemble album, and with the accompanying bass, drums, percussion, keyboard tracks all 'getting in the way,' I think you will find Bond's musical personalities a little dull this go 'round. Don't get me wrong I like the album, not just as much as their first. I think it will be a big hit overseas, just not in the U.S. (What they need is the contract to perform the music to a James Bond film, i.e. the last track on Shine, and then maybe they will get the national exposure necessary to make it the U.S.) Certainly an enjoyable album, I look forward to a better third attempt out of their five-record deal with Decca. 'Till then i'll be waiting. (by A music fan) What people search: |
