Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's 'I'm Falling in Love with Someone' and the inventively arranged 'Nuttycracker Suite'). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of 'Gimme Gimme' (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with 'They Don't Know.' Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age.
Buyer Reviews : Thoroughly Modern Millie is a hilarious new musical that lives up to all the accolades it is receiving. Sutton Foster is absolutely perfect in the role of Millie Dillmount. Her voice is wonderful, and he nails every single note she sings. She has a great range, from quite and reserved singing all the way to broadway diva-ish belting. She deserved the Best Actress Tony, and she got it for her wonderful performance here. Harriet Harris is hilarious in her role as Mrs. Meers. 'They Don't Know' is a great song performed by her. Extremely enjoyable. She almost steals the show, just like she stole the hearts of the voters to win the Best Featured Actress Tony. Gavin Creel, Marc Kudisch, Angela Christian plays out their roles wonderfully, shining in each of their respective roles. Both men received Tony nominations for their performances, and they are well-deserved, as you can hear on this recording. Even the chorus sounds wonderful in this new show that is currently taking over Broadway. The ensemble is as strong a group as any show you can think of. A wonderful show, with a wonderful cast recording. Definately a must-have.
