The first of the Fab Five to break out on his own, Carter reveals a rocker's heart that's lurked under his high-gloss pop exterior. While he rasps and struts through his 12-song debut, we're not talking headbanging mayhem here. Carter excels in the brand of guitar rock that put Bon Jovi and Bryan Adams on the map. The elder Carter conjures the militaristic flamboyance of Queen on 'Girls in the USA,' or the teasing coyness of 'Raspberry Beret'-era Prince on 'My Confession.' The anthemic 'Is It Saturday Yet' is another highlight. Despite a seven-year tenure singing other people's songs as a member of America's favorite boy band, Carter proves himself an able tunesmith, penning five of the tracks on the disc, and plays some fine guitar.
Buyer Reviews : Can I just say how much I love Nick Carter's new sound? At 34, I find little music that doesn't sound regurgitated from 6 months ago. But with Now or Never, Nick Carter has harkened back to the early 80's with a purer kind of rock. With few exceptions, this album is a fastpaced kicker not unlike the 80's Bon Jovi, Journey, and Van Halen ... with a little Kid Rock thrown in for fun. If I Stand For You, Help Me, Girls In the USA, and I Just Wanna Take You Home doesn't get you moving, check your pulse. 'Cause something is seriously wrong. Girls In The USA is the next big single and I Stand For You is the new anthem of every young person. Aren't we all immortal once?
The three ballards are a smooth reminder that Nick Carter can tug at the heartstrings. From My Confession to Do I Have to Cry For You, Nick does a masterful job of showing us again why The Backstreet Boys made it big. And Who Needs the World puts a gold stamp on the whole CD. I think we'll be hearing it a lot more. Nick Carter brings the listener into his world and reminds us of all the angst of being young. There are little reminders throughout the album that this young man has lived a lifetime quickly. It gives the album so much heart.
It isn't always as polished as some bands out today (I Just Wanna Take You Home sounds like everybody just sat down in one setting and banged it out ... and had a grand time doing it ) but it is fun. With drums and guitar taking the place of back up singers, Nick Carter just belts the songs out. And all the emotion is there to be heard ... not produced out into a jumble of revamped, remixed noise like so many albums today.
It's just Nick Carter being Nick Carter. And it's very apparent that he likes himself and his generation. Now Or Never is powerful, furious, crisp, and just so much FUN. If you tap your foot to music or jump up and dance when you hear good stuff on the radio, this one's for you. It will keep you dancing - slow & fast - all day long
