A few welcome surprises surface, including EP remixes, a rarity (the 1993 David Arnold collaboration 'Play Dead'), and the previously unreleased 'It's in Our Hands,' a clever blip-pop number that would have fit nicely on either 1997's Homogenic or 2001's Vespertine. Starting off with a dreamy remix of 'All Is Full of Love,' the collection contrasts giddy dance-pop like 'Hyperballad' (from the wonderful Post) with the brooding thump of 'Army of Me' and Debut's 'Human Behaviour,' while injecting liberal doses of experimental ballads such as 'Joga' and 'Pagan Poetry.' Some choices will grate on the nerves of purists (the sans strings mix of 'Hyperballad'), and it would have been nice to hear something from Selmasongs, but with Björk's incredibly consistent discography to work from, it's impossible to screw up a retrospective compilation such as this.
Buyer Reviews : A really nice collection of Bjork songs.
Today, I went out to buy some music. Low and behold, what did I see? Bjork's Greatest Hits collection. 15 great songs on one compilation. The first track, a real beautiful alternative version of 'All is full of love'. Much better than the original from the 'Homogenic' album.
I love 'Play Dead', for the great orchestration and the style of song. 'It's in our hands', which is a new track, is another really nice song, compared to many of Bjork's wilder music. These two tracks are from another world of Bjork, but I like and appreciate her for all her music.
Nice remix of 'Big time sensuality'. A little stuck on one note, throughout the background melody, but nice all the same. When popping the cd into the stereo, I immediately wished that the songs would be different versionsl. In a way, I didn't think before buying the cd, because I already have most of the individual Bjork albums. But, it's nice to have everything compiled onto one cd, where you don't have to keep switching discs to get all your favourite songs. Of course, I think that 15 songs for a greatest hits is not enough. There are lots more songs which should have made it to the cd, but it's alright.
One song which could have gone into the song list is 'Heirloom'. Others are 'I miss you' and 'It's oh so quiet'. I don't mind anyway, because if there had been more songs, maybe the cd would've dragged on too long. The songs which did make it are perfect, and display Bjork's many talents, both as a singer and a songwriter. Her lyrics are always original, emotional at times, melodic, crazy and just totally BJORK! The music wouldn't be Bjork, without all the screams, and funny, quarky background sounds taking over at times. I absolutely love the oriental sound at the beginning of 'Pagan Poetry'. Took me to another world for a moment.
Too bad about the artwork though. No pictures of the artist. Just some hand-drawn scribbles and free-hand artwork in black and white. Would have been nice to see a 'thank you' page to the fans at the back. Maybe even some lyrics. Liked the photo of her inside the cardboard package where one side of Bjork's back is plastered with cement, which has chipped away. It looks like a poor attempt at mummifying her with cement and a few pish posh bandages.
TRACKLISTING BELOW:
01. All Is Full of Love 02. Hyperballad 03. Human Behavior 04. Joga 05. Bachelorette 06. Army of Me 07. Pagan Poetry 08. Big Time Sensuality 09. Venus as a Boy 10. Hunter 11. Hidden Place 12. Isobel 13. Possibly Maybe 14. Play Dead 15. It's in Our Hands
So, after all that, I think what Bjork Gudmonsdottir is trying to say, is 'keep it simple, yet satisfying'. I agree!
