This is simply an awesome CD. Meshell has thrown down the most powerful musical statement since Michael Franti and Spearhead's 'Stay Human'.
It's a challenge to describe Meshell's approach to her art. Elements of jazz, funk, poetry, soul and hip hop blend so easily through her works, and it's clear that she disdains categorization.
There are too many good songs on this disc to offer up individual props, but if one tune deserves mention above all, it's 'Trust', a smoldering, lust-tinged number that features some of the most erotic instrumentation I have ever heard. Meshell is in great voice here, and backing vocals by Caron Wheeler (Soul II Soul) turn up the fire even higher. Wheeler also guests on 'Earth', a great song with the soul of the 70's and the attitude of the 00's.
There is some great funk thrown down as well on this album, particularly on 'Hot Night' (with a suprising guest appearance by Angela Davis), and 'Pocketbook'. If all you have heard is the Missy Elliot remix of Pocketbook (currently popular on radio), be sure to check out the original - it really slams.
Other favorites on this disc are the lush, piano based 'Akel Dama', and the politically charged 'Dead Nigga Blvd'.
Listening to this disc, you discover that the 'mix' referred to in the title doesn't refer to the disc, but rather to the personal mix that makes up the individual known as Meshell. Themes of black empowerment, sapphic lust, parental concern and self respect are liberally sprinkled throughout this disc, and it sounds like Meshell exorcised a few demons along the way in making this music. It also sounds like she had a blast writing and recording these songs.
