Editorial Reviews :
Where Off the Wall was pretty much straight good times, Thriller introduced dread into Michael Jackson's solo work. By 1995's HIStory, this element curdled into overwhelming self-regard and out-of-touchness, but here it's bracing. While Thriller offers its share of cute ('The Girl Is Mine,' a duet with Paul McCartney that was the album's first single; 'P.Y.T.'), the most memorable cuts remain 'Billie Jean,' 'Beat It,' and 'Wanna Be Startin' Somethin',' all of which meld musical imagination and worried-mind lyrics.
There's also the title track, which takes a cue from Parliament's concept pieces in employing Vincent Price to warn that nonfunky forces will 'terrorize y'all's neighborhood.' Thriller, of course, continues to battle with the Eagles' first greatest-hits package for the title of biggest-selling U.S. long-player ever. Bonus material on this edition includes 'Someone in the Dark,' from Jackson's E.T. children's album, and a Quincy Jones interview in which the producer cites 'My Sharona' as the inspiration for 'Beat It'--and, even better, the real-life Billie Jean's claim that Michael was 'the father of one of her twins.' --Rickey Wright

Buyer Reviews :
'Thriller' has sold 26 million copies in the US and 47 million worldwide. It also spawned 7 Top 10 hits but this isn't necessarily why this album is so great.

This album is a classic not because it sold so many copies and had so many hit singles though. If the songs were not hit singles, they still would be classics. It's about the music on this CD, first and foremost, nothing else.

Thriller was revolutionary in its time. The sounds and styles incoporated on this album were new at the time, a time of dying disco and underground punk. Thriller succeded in it's ability to trancsend racial barriers. The ability to transcend racial boundaries. Thriller was not only huge with whites and african americans, it was popular all around the world. One of the first true international successes.

There's pop, rock, r & b and dance rhythms; slow, fast and midtempo songs.

'Wanna Be Startin' Something' gets the album moving. It's a disco inferno and builds up to a chanting crescendo. The next two songs slow things down after the frenzied opening.

'Baby Be Mine' is a nice mid-tempo song.

'The Girl Is Mine' is the superstar duet with Paul McCartney. The song shows off both artists' vocal talents as they trade verses fighting over a girl's affection. You can almost see the song as a passing of the torch from the Beatles to Jackson as the world's biggest act.

The humorous 'Thriller' follows and it contains Vincent Price's debut as a rapper.

'Beat It' is the song that pushed the album into the cultural phenomenon that it was. By employing guitar god Eddie Van Halen on the song, Jackson was able to break out of the mold of an R & B artist and reach a vast white audience. Jackson showed he was able to transcend all labels and reach listeners of all colors and musical tastes.

'Billie Jean', the first number one song on the album follows and was shown on the Motown 25th anniversary special that helped show Jackson's amazing dancing abilities and push album sales through the roof. It was also the first video by a black artist to gain major airplay on the predominately white MTV, setting the stage for other black artists like Prince to start reaching a more diverse audience.

'Human Nature' is a pretty ballad and 'P.Y.T.' has more of a hard edge. His sister Janet sings back up on the tune.

The album closes with another ballad 'The Lady In My Life'. 'The Lady In My Life' is probably Michael's greatest love song. His voice on this one is pure vocal beauty. A great song for a great artist born in a great time in music.

So if you don't already have Thriller, buy it because of the music, not because of the fanfare that goes with it.

An absolute classic.
