While lumped in with the often indistinguishable nu metal crowd, Staind stands out, thanks in part to memorable ballads, such as the pained and beautiful 'It's Been A While' and 'Epiphany' from the quartet's 2001 breakthrough Break the Cycle. Their latest represents a natural progression; realizing the commercial potential of the poignant but heavy rock ballad, they've penned a slew of them. The light and cheery 'How About You' is radio-ready, while the layered, string-backed 'So Far Away,' and honest and grateful musing on success, is another get-out-the lighters showcase for singer Aaron Lewis. Lewis's beautiful ode for his baby, 'Zoe Jane,' a tribute to late Alice in Chains vocalist Layne Staley ('Layne,' which intentionally and effectively cops Alice's signature sound), and the grandiose thank-you note 'Intro' are more strong, overtly introspective entries in Lewis' sometimes mushy, sometimes touching CD diary. --Katherine Turman
Buyer Reviews : Listening to Dysfunction and now 14 shades, it is clear that Staind has come a long way. Many miss the head banging, neck breaking jams of Staind, but Staind has gotten a lot better musically and Aaron is a much better writer now. Why would a band stay the same, it would become redundant wouldn't it? Aaron Lewis is writing a lot better now and Mike's becoming a much better guitarist. Why would you waste your time just playing heavy riffs all the time and not experiment and create beautiful music and meaningful lyrics? All of you that do not like how Staind has evolved and do not appreciate the music, are really missing out on a lot. I used to be the type that wanted heavy metal all the time, but there came a time when that all stopped and I started appreciating the music and lyrics. Imagine if Staind kept playing heavy all the time, then you would find the same people saying 'It's repitive, the same old Staind.' By the way this album does have heavy songs, but this time around Staind focuses on showing off their true musical talents. Staind keep it up, you did a hell of a job with this album! Aaron Lewis I feel your pain, happiness, and sadness. So go to the store, trust me, you will not be disappointed. Try to get the Staind album that has the DVD 'Homegrown.' The DVD will show the band's past and present through home videos.
