And for 2002, theirs is either an invitation or an offer to Spend the Night. And it'll be a whopper of a night. 'It's on the Rocks' opens the evening on an anthemic note. The stoner paean 'Pass It Around' appears just past midpoint, and '5 O'Clock in the Morning' closes the event. What's in between? Straight-ahead drumbeats, snarling guitars, and sassy vocals are the band's calling cards, and they're all very much in evidence here. Songs like 'Take It Off' and 'Please Don't Tease' are built upon bouncing melodies that are revved by choppy pop-punk guitar and simple rhymes ('tease' and 'knees,' for example). The Donnas' party--'Take Me to the Backseat' included--doesn't rage so much as it embraces a kind of postpunk free love that swaggers like the Ramones circa 'Rockaway Beach.'
Buyer Reviews : I first saw The Donnas on my local cable channel's rock music 'station,' where they play new and upcoming artists. Not that The Donnas are that 'new,' they've been around a good 10 years... but this is the first I ever heard of them, as I listened to 'Take It Off.' The next day I was in Sam Goody buying the album. It takes a damn good band to get me to buy an album based on one song, and I was not disappointed.
The album, in its straightforward riffs, driving bass, and nonwavering drums, cranks in a way reminiscent of AC/DC's 'Back In Black.' The songs are the feel-good, sexually suggestive, fun-loving ones that will probably be a staple at college parties and Spring Break. Listening to four young women sing about sex, guys, etc. the way Brian Johnson and Bon Scott might about girls is refreshing in a way... it reminds me of a Sarah Michelle Gellar line from Cruel Intentions- 'God forbid I have an opinion and enjoy sex!'
Great album!
