The Arista debut of Carlos Santana and band gives fans of the soulful guitar vet two albums in one, but it's a decidedly good-news, bad-news proposition. First, there's a fine collection of late-'90s-model Santana--tastefully tooled songs driven by Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms ('[Da Le] Taleo,' 'Africa Bamba,' 'Migra,' 'Primavera,' and the emotionally charged instrumental 'El Farol') that allow Carlos plenty of elbowroom for his passionate soloing. Then there's the collection of tracks featuring a lineup of de rigueur alternative and hip-hop stars, including Dave Matthews, Everlast, Rob Thomas, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Eagle Eye Cherry. To their credit, Matthews ('Love of My Life') and Eagle Eye Cherry ('Wishing It Was') muster enough chemistry to make the fusion work. But the rest of the collaborations feel like an unnecessary stretch to reach out to a younger demographic that El Jefe has little trouble attracting on his own terms.

As Carlos evolved musically and spiritually, his music took his listening audience on journeys to the expanding reaches of Carlos' musical perspectives; yet, the common thread of Carlos Santana's beautiful guitar work always announced his presence in whatever singular or joint efforts Carlos produced...like a unique musical signature. In this latest of Carlos' musical offerings, Carlos displays an incredible new synchronicity with his fellow musicians, showing his musical mastery can be adapted to many varied musical styles and artists. The evolution of Carlos Santana's musical gifts to us continues into new areas with his newly inspired attitude to share his God-given talents with a whole new genre of young and inspired artists such as Rob Thomas, The Product G&B, Lauryn Hill, Eagle Eye Cherry, Mana, and Everlast. Carlos also joins forces with such musical icons as Eric Clapton and Dave Matthews for a musical foray or two. The musical relationships mutually compliment each other and only add to the listener's musical enjoyment. Also, in 'Supernatural', Carlos' still provides his unique style and brand of guitarsmanship on many tracks where he alone has the center stage. The musical accompianment is top notch throughout, the songs are captivating, the new musical alliances refreshing, and one is left feeling musically satiated after enjoying Carlos' latest musical presentation. Congratulations, Carlos on taking all of us appreciative listeners to new areas of your ever expanding tastes. You are considered one of the greatest musicians in the world today, if not for all of time; and, I can't wait for the next release of musical joyride that Carlos Santana will embark on, of course taking us all with him.
