After recording the ragged-but-right Let It Be, the group held on for this ambitious effort, an album that was to become their best-selling. Though all four contribute to the first side's writing, John Lennon's hard-rocking, 'Come Together' and 'I Want You (She's So Heavy)' make the strongest impression. A series of song fragments edited together in suite form dominates side two; its portentous, touching, official close ('Golden Slumbers'/'Carry That Weight'/'The End') is nicely undercut, in typical Beatles fashion, by Paul McCartney's cheeky 'Her Majesty,' which follows. --Rickey Wright
Buyer Reviews : If you remember one thing from reading this review, it should be the following comment: BUY THIS ALBUM!!! There exists in this world only one 'Best Album of All Time,' and this is it. Listen to The Beatles on 'Let It Be' during the 'Get Back' sessions, and you will hear how they were desintigrating. I find it absolutely amazing that they could 'Come Together' one last time to make this masterpiece. Abbey Road is not an album to skip tracks on. It should be listened to from beginning to 'The End' (and beyond...don't forget Paul's little ditty 'Her Majesty'). Try listening straight from 'Because' to 'Her Majesty' with a good sound system on high volume in a dimmed room. You haven't lived until you've had that experience. This album is not 'Rock and Roll;' it is true art.
Abbey Road is a great farewell from the Beatles. Everyone has a song: John (Come Together, I Want You (She's so Heavy), et.al.), Paul (Maxwell's Silver Hammer, Oh Darling!, et. al.), George (Something, Here Comes The Sun), and Ringo (Octopus's Garden) all contribute to make this a success. In 'The End,' each Beatle has a solo: Ringo with his only recorded Beatles drum solo and the rest with short guitar solos under the words '...love you...love you...' signifying the beginning of their solo careers.
No other band in history has made such a masterful exit from the rock world as the Beatles did in Abbey Road. If you buy it for no other reason, do it for the medley of songs from 'You Never Give Me Your Money' to 'The End'. The reprise of the 'You Never Give Me Your Money' theme during 'Carry That Weight' is incredible. One more comment: the vocal harmony on 'Because' is the best the Beatles ever did...don't miss out.
Buy Abbey Road...PLEASE LISTEN! YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE MISSIN'!!!
