This complex, often psychedelic music works very well because Pink Floyd doesn't rush anything; the songs are mainly slow to mid-tempo, with attention paid throughout to musical texture and mood. The sound effects on songs like 'On the Run,' 'Time' and especially 'Money' (with sampled sounds of clinking coins and cash registers turned into rhythmic accompaniment) are impressive, especially when we remember that 1973 was before the advent of digital recording techniques. This is probably Pink Floyd's best-known work, and it's an excellent place to start if you're new to the band. --Genevieve Williams
Buyer Reviews : Dark Side of the Moon is one of the rare gems of rock 'n roll. Every song on the CD is great and a classic. On the Run is one of my all-time favorites for its cool sound effects and, of course, Richard Wright's synthesizers. Time is another classic, speaking of the life cycle and aging process, helped along by David Gilmour's guitars and Roger Waters' lyrics. The Great Gig in the Sky is Richard Wright's masterpiece, discussing the afterlife and our opinions of heaven and hell as we know it. Money is possibly the greatest rock song ever, and Roger Waters' best song. The combination of the sound effects, the guitars, and the blending of jazz and blues with rock themes is priceless. Us and Them, to me, is a song with a strange pairing of writers (Roger Waters and Richard Wright), who never were on the same page to begin with, and who had much hatred towards each other. The song talks about war between lands and wars between two people at once. Brain Damage is a trippy song, speaking of insanity and mental instability (possibly a tribute to Syd Barrett?). Eclipse is a great way to close the album and has a classic saying at the end (Roger Waters' line, 'There is no dark side of the moon. Matter of fact, it's all dark.'). This is the best rock album ever and any comparison to any other rock album is totally unfair. Stay with the best and buy DSOTM now!
