Few of the 15 ultra-accessible songs miss their mark. Big-name artists Shaggy, Moby, and the Eels keep the kids hopping, while a heap of lesser-known acts also make impressive contributions, most notably Pepe Deluxe (the from-Mars-sounding 'Everybody Pass Me By') and the D-tent Boys (the irresistibly fun 'Dig It'). It wouldn't be a Disney soundtrack without a wannabe or two, and for that we have a sprinkling of flimsy rock and country-folk. Still, title aside, here's a soundtrack stitched tight enough to avoid gaps in the fan base. --Tammy La Gorce
Buyer Reviews : Got the CD for my 7 year old son after we had read the book and seen the movie. But I've been listening to it for days as I drive around town. I think it's a great introduction for young (and older) listeners to a variety of musical styles- rap, blues, folk, pop, rock, country. The book, movie and soundtrack all have a very positive message and complement each other well. I recommend the book to read to your kids as a bed time story, and while there are some challenging themes (racial bigotry/tolerance, corrupt authority figures), they are handled well. And the book introduces young readers to some literary devices they will appreciate later. And, since this is a CD review, the CD is very enjoyable. (My 7 yr old wanted to give it 5 stars; I'd give it 4 1/2.)
