But this Winnie the Pooh-inspired spin-off is a joyous musical surprise from first track to last. Veteran singer/songwriter Carly Simon seems to have soaked up a half-century of Disney animated song tradition and joyously made it her own on the seven new songs here, as well as a smart, modern folk-jazzy reinterpretation of the traditional 'Winnie the Pooh' title tune. 'If I Wasn't So Small (The Piglet Song),' 'Mother's Intuition,' and 'With a Few Good Friends' are all charmers, while the march-along 'Sing Ho For the Life of a Bear' taps into the vaunted Sherman Brothers tradition with playful joy. This is children's music without an ounce of condescension; indeed Simon's own children--Ben and Sally Taylor--are present on several of the tracks. Simon's sparkling slate of songs is augmented by five sprightly selections from Carl Johnson's orchestral score, and the collection concludes with a handful of bonus track demos by a solo Simon.
Buyer Reviews : I was a die-hard Carly Simon fan in the late 70's and early 80's. Being in high school at the time, however, I soon succumbed to peer pressure to listen to more 'hip' music. I also caved in to my desire to keep up with my family members who were into progressive jazz (a good thing). So Carly got shelved. It wasn't until I saw 'Piglet's Big Movie' with my 3 year-old son this weekend that I remembered (and actually realized, since I was so young back then) how talented Carly Simon really is and how original her music is. Her arrangement of 'Winnie The Pooh' (aka: 'Deep In The Hundred Acre Wood') is inspired. She's changed the key and used jazz chords and picking. I'm dying to get a copy of the sheet music. 'Mother's Intuition' is original, moving, and musically exciting. 'Sing Ho' will forever live in my house, as my son and I march around singining, much as we do with 'Heigh Ho' from Snow White. 'With a Few Good Friends' is universally relevant and very sweet. All in all, this CD is fun for children but, more importantly (how many times have I listened to 'Sleepy Time on Sesame Street'?), musically interesting and enjoyable for us grown-ups!
