I think I should start off by saying that I adore Kristin Chenoweth. I LOVE every song she sings in. I was so happy. She sounds amazing on the CD. My favorite song on the CD is definetly Goodnight My Someone. It makes me smile. I love this song anyway, but I adore the way Kristin sings it. I could really feel the emotion behind it, and I think that is important. I was really impressed with the quartet songs. They are fabulous, definetly my favorite of all the different versions of the school board I have heard. They have wonderful voices. As for Matthew Broderick, I did not know what to expect. I really liked him on The Producers CD, but the reviews said bad things about him in Music Man. I think he does a good job. He definetly does not go at it in the same way as Robert Preston which is good. I always think it is better to do a character your own way instead of imitating someone who made the character famous. My favorite song Matthew sings would be Marian the Librarian. He does a good job on that one. I was worried about Molly Shannon as Eulalie. I really am not a big fan of Molly's at all. She does much more of a talk-sing thing on the CD. Plus her pick a little ladies have lovely voices to back her up. So that is good. Cameron Monaghan's (he plays Winthrop) much more natural sounding lisp is great. On other versions of Music Man, I have been known to skip the Winthrop songs because the overexagerrated lisp was annoying. Cameron does not have this problem, so I enjoy his singing much more than other Winthrops. In general, I think the actors who are not the 'stars' sound great on the CD. This is just another reason they should be given some credit in the liner notes. They all sound so fabulous and deserve to have their work acknowledged. Oh, and for the record I adore Debra Monk and wish Mrs. Paroo had more to sing because she is great. Also, I almost wish the Mayor had a song just because I like Victor Garber's singing a lot, but what can you do? The mayor doesn't generally sing. I loooooove Til There Was You on this CD. It seems like most of the songs Kristin sings start out really slow and quiet. I like this though because you can hear her amazing voice so clearly without a bunch of distracting orchestrations behind it. Can I emphasize anymore how much I love Kristin's singing??? Cause I do. I really do. My roommate came in while the CD was on and listened to about half of it. She liked Matthew. She thought he sounded pretty good. But she was really excited about Kristin because she adores the Music Man and even saw it a couple years back in NYC. She said that she has always loved Harold's songs and disliked Marian's but she really likes the way they sound on the CD. So that made me smile. Well, I guess that is pretty much what I have to say about the CD. Oh, and listening to Shipoopi makes me want to see the dancing SO bad. Okay, that is all. If you are trying to decide whether or not to buy this CD, I encourage you to go for it. It is not the same Music Man you are used to, but it is a completely enjoyable new version. It is worth the price just for Kristin Chenoweth's songs as Marian. (by Cristin Whitley) What people search: |
