Buyer Reviews : 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' represents the second big disappointment from film composer extraordinaire John Williams in 2002, the first being his lackluster, uninspiring score for 'Star Wars: Episode II.'
The 'Chamber of Secrets' score has little to say that wasn't already said in 'The Sorcerer's Stone.' All of the themes from the previous film appear, and they are drilled into our heads over and over and over again on this new album. The only new theme to speak of is for Fawkes the Phoenix, and it is a rather unmemorable one at that.
Then there's this business of the score being 'adapted and conducted by William Ross,' yet the album liner notes insist that John Williams composed the music. Why does this sound suspiciously like they're crediting Williams for his 'Sorcerer's Stone' score here, and William Ross is responsible for what little new material there is to hear? Either way, Williams has not delivered.
Is John Williams finally tired of scoring overblown fantasy films? It certainly seems that way. He didn't even bother to write new music for the spectacular arena battle at the end of 'Episode II' -- the film just recycled cues right out of 'Episode I.' Sure, his 'Minority Report' score was an interesting switch for Williams, but can you remember anything about it other than it was 'different'? I can't.
After the double disappointment of 'Potter' and 'Episode II,' Williams can no longer be considered the premier film composer; perhaps that title belongs to Thomas Newman, Hans Zimmer or Howard Shore nowadays.
