With Charmbracelet, Carey goes out of her way to fix all those aesthetic glitches, tempering the overblown vocals, simpering lyrics, and uninspired funk covers of her last album and returning to what she does best--showcasing her magnificent five-octave voice and pillaging her lift history for inspiration. After her breakup with Mexican superstar Luis Miguel, MTV meltdown, hospitalization for exhaustion, and the death of her father, Carey had a lot of emotional baggage to sift through. She has and, as a result, has created an inspired and diverse 15-song opus that finds her skipping from an impassioned Aretha Franklin-like gospel ('Saving Grace') to an impish cover of Def Leppard's power ballad 'Bringin' on the Heartbreak.' Though he's not mentioned by name, rapper Eminem is given a pointed drubbing on 'Clowns' for hinting in the press and in his own song 'Superman' of a relationship with Carey. There hasn't been such a compelling musical soap opera since Carly Simon's '70s roman à clef, 'You're So Vain.' However, the disc's most inspiring moment comes on 'Sunflowers for Alfred Roy,' a wistful elegy for her father that recounts his final days in his hospital room. This is a stunning return to form for Carey.
Buyer Reviews : This album is fantastic! It has been crafted beautifully from start to finish. Unlike the 2001 commercial flop 'Glitter,' this album proves that Mariah still has got it. Here is my track by track review:
Track 1: Through the Rain - 9 out of 10 This song is a wonderful ballad sung in true Mariah form. In it, she goes from a gentle whisper, to an amazing finish belting off every note from the depths of her soul. It may not have done well on the charts, but is DEFINATELY worth a listen!
Track 2: Boy (I Need You) - 9 out of 10 This may be a 'remake' persay of Cam'ron's 2002 summer hit 'Oh Boy' but it is a NEW jam for Mariah. She burns it up with this track, the lyrics are on fire, and the beat sounds so good it makes ya wanna dance all over the room.
Track 3: The One - 9 out of 10 The second single off of this album, The One, is a good song. Though to me it isn't as catchy as some of the other tracks on the album, it's still a great song with a fun message.
Track 4: Yours - 9 out of 10 This is a mid-tempo ballad in which Mariah's vocals shine. It's a breezy song with a good message, reminiscent of Mariah's 2000 #1 single 'Thank God I Found You'. There is a different version of this track (Yours) featuring Justin Timberlake (of NSYNC) and will most likely be released as a B-side in the coming months.
Track 5: You Got Me - 10 out of 10 This is DEFINATELY my favorite track of the album. It features Freeway as well as Jay-Z, but Mariah dominates the song with ease. The 'chipmunk voice' used in this song has an amazing hook... watch this song grab ya and never let you go! Look to see this as a 2003 #1 single!!
Track 6: I Only Wanted - 10 out of 10 A Latin Styled Ballad, rather like 1998's #1 single 'My All', this song has a haunting value to it in the verses, but resolves itself in the end with an amazing finale. Mariah utilizes her full vocal range in this song, and pulls it off with ease.
Track 7: Clown - 10 out of 10 Now, some people will say this song is in reference to the alleged relationship between Mariah and Eminem, I'll leave you to your own opinion after you listen to it. In any matter, this song is a slam to someone... This is an easy listen, tho it will take you a bit to learn all the words. :)
Track 8: You Had Your Chance - 10 out of 10 My other favorite track of this album. This would be catagorized as the 'Fantasy' or 'Heartbreaker' of Charmbracelet. Fast paced, and fun, Mariah puts someone in his place. . Mariah's amazing lyric writing ability is evident in this song, and JD's production is flawless.
Track 9: My Saving Grace - 9 out of 10 Now, this is a 'choir/churchy' sort of ballad. It has a good message, and you can tell that Mariah really feels what she is singing on this track. Not my favorite song on the album at all, but definately not one I would press 'Skip' on either.
Track 10: Lullaby - 7 out of 10 A definate sequel to the song 'The Roof' from the 1997 release 'Butterfly.' An easy going track with great production. A good listen.
Track 11: Irresistable - 10 out of 10
Mariah burns it up on the 'westside' with this track... with a guest rap by West Side Connection, she shows how Irresistable this song is.
Track 12: Subtle Invitation - 10 out of 10 for Originality A Jazzy track in which Mariah utilizes a live band. It's a step out of the ordinary for Mariah, but it suits her.
Track 13: Bringin' on the Heartbreak - 10 out of 10 A remake of Def Leppard's song of the same title, Mariah really brings it to life in the 00's. This song starts out slow, but Mariah rback
