This double-CD acoustic set contains snippets from her debut album, but most of it is new material that Hill performs with raw, shockingly honest intensity. Coming on the heels of a well-publicized period of depression and unhappiness for the ex-Fugees singer, Hill's reenergized outlook is plainly evident in this stripped-down performance--it's basically just Hill and her unplugged guitar--as well as the highly spiritual nature of the material. Cutting across musical styles from bossa nova ('Just Like Water') to Marley-esque rebel songs ('Oh Jerusalem,' 'The Conquering Lion,' 'Freedom Time'), the singer's voice is throaty and rough throughout, giving the performance an earthy, heartfelt pull. It's a deeply personal performance, filled with blistering social commentary and the evils of self-delusion while detailing her ongoing attempt to escape from the public persona her fame has created. In destroying her old artistry, she discovers a new creative force, yielding a mesmerizing and enchanting classic.
Buyer Reviews : I didn't know what to expect from the artist formerly known as L Boogie. It had been a 4 year hiatus since she last blessed the world with 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' I knew that she had experience her share of adversity (i.e legal battles and the much gossipped issues with her and Rohan) but I didn't know if that pain would be felt in her music. Along comes the 2 disc 'MTV Unplugged No. 2.0' At first listen, I thought the girl had toooo many issues to deal with. But upon listening to it again, I realize that this woman had been given the responsibility to convince the masses to get off their duffs!. With great responsibility comes great power and that's what this album has plenty of--Power! There aren't any backup singers or a live band. It's just-well-Lauryn and her guitar as she suceeds in waking up the masses with topics that range from her love for her man, rebellion against social injustices, and unlearning everything we think we know about RELIGIION. My favorite songs are 'Adam lives in theory' 'Oh Jerusalem' 'I find it hard to say (rebel)' 'I'll never forget' 'I just want you around' and 'Mr. Intentional'
She begs the audience to listen intently to her words even though the subject matter may be too deep for them. But that's what makes the album so darn good--the combination of content-heavy lyrics and deeply felt emotion. In fact, Lauryn often gets choked up through most of the songs but she always manages to regains her composure and finish strongly. This album is worth the money and I think it will fill a void that has been left in the r&b/hip-hop/gospel genre.
