These days, R&B girls are a dime a dozen, but Ashanti Douglas is a step ahead of the pack. Youthful appeal and a pleasantly dreamy voice complement the 21-year-old singer/songwriter's ability to pen her own radio-friendly verses. However, Ashanti's young'un status shows itself through her treatment of the usual R&B-girl subject matter: love standing strong, love gone bad, and the search for love of self. Songs like 'Foolish,' 'Happy,' and 'Baby' are as simple and agreeable as their one-word titles suggest, while 'Call,' 'Movies,' and 'Over' take a slightly more earthy approach.
Ashanti is definitely R&B for the under-30 set, and as such it's bouncy and playful. This debut, as is to be expected of a Murder Inc. release, features a strong hip-hop element, including two duets with Irv Gotti's golden child, Ja Rule, and the sampling of a controversial Notorious B.I.G. composition in 'Unfoolish.' The kids should love it.

Ashanti has been called the princess of hip hop/R&B and she could be, if you just based your judgement on current hits and sales not artistically. She does write her own songs which are straightforward and waiting for you to sing along. The Intro is a collage of all of Ashanti's previous guest spots on a number of songs and those songs are not a major departure from this album.
Hip hop producers use the same popular tricks used on her singles 'Foolish' and 'Happy';these songs were made with the top 40 in mind. 'Foolish' is a sample of Biggie's 'One More Chance' which itself was a sample of El Debarge's 'Stay With Me'. 'Leaving (Always on Time Part 2)' features (guess who) Ja Rule and recycles the same electronic string loop Part 1 had. That same loop resurfaces in 'Rescue' and 'Happy' is annoyingly cheerful with its constant flute effect. The skits are cheesy and unnecessary in the fact that they setup songs that are self-explanatory from the first verse.
The album is not horrible but there are not any surprises. If you heard the singles, you already have an idea of the album's premise. The standout track was 'Thank You' where you finally hear her full vocal ability while she thanks everyone for being there. Mostly younger people will enjoy but there are other artists with more substance for youngsters to enjoy e.g. Fiona Apple and Alicia Keys just to name a few.
