Instead, Carey is right back to her old tricks; cooing trademark melismatic spirals through sexy, beat-heavy hits. Fans will dig the bedroom slink of 'Baby Doll,' the dripping 'Honey' and the infectious title track (reprised, along with a bit of Elton John's 'Skyline Pigeon,' in 'Fly Away'). The highlight is a duet with Dru Hill on Prince's 'The Beautiful Ones,' which just might be her most pointed commentary on Mottola.
Buyer Reviews : This album is a magnificent collection of songs by the amazing, multi-faceted Mariah Carey. I just discovered this CD the summer of 2000, but I will never lose it, if I can help it. It is now one of my favorite and most-played CDs. I will review track by track. Honey: An infectious soul-dance tune. Smooth vocals, sweet background music. Good album starter. Butterfly: A beautiful song explaining some of Mariah's deepest feelings. (I believe, sorry if I'm wrong Mariah) Gorgeous lead vocals by Mariah, and beautiful back-up. Exquisite. My All: Truly amazing. Sweet, sad, and strong vocals with no back-up (A smart choice). The music is so emotional and overwhelming. The Roof: Enchanting. It sets a wonderful mood. Though I haven't seen the video, I am positive it is awesome. Such beautiful descriptions, it's almost like you're there. Fourth of July: Very similar to The Roof, again exquisite. Also puts you right there with Mariah. Breakdown: One of the album's best songs, and a very cute, sexy video. The vocals are smooth, even though the ad-libs are a BIT overdone. Still a great track, and one to put on repeat. It reinvents itself every time. Babydoll: Similar to Breakdown, but at the other end of the relationship. Very sexy and infectious. Another to put on repeat. Close My Eyes: Emotional and moving. Mariah put her innermost feelings about her childhood forward on this beautiful, enchanting track. Whenever You Call: My favorite song on the album, possibly my favorite Mariah song. It is beautifully produced with amazing vocals and incredible music. The Mariah-only version, found here on Butterfly is better and more beautiful than the version with Brian McKnight on #1's. Fly Away(Butterfly Reprise): The worst track on the CD, but acceptable and understandable because it is an interlude. One to skip. Sorry Mariah! Beautiful Ones: Exquisite and smooth. Interesting vocals. A tad too long, but this one also reinvents itself everytime, and it grows on you.
Outside: A wonderful way to end this incredible CD. Narrates anyone's feelings og not being accepted. Again, Mariah shows her musical genius. Overall, this is definitely Mariah's best CD with smooth vocals, beautiful music, and intelligent, beautiful lyrics. A must-have for any music lover, but especially one of R&B, hip-hop, pop, or Mariah!
