Murder Inc.'s eager young cash cow is an MC whose ability to sound like 2Pac conflicts with his urge to sing like Donny Hathaway, and these two seemingly disparate influences firmly butt heads. Songs like the Ashanti-accented 'Mesmerize' and the downtempo 'Rock Star' showcase Ja's wobbly baritone croon, while 'Thug Lovin'' (featuring the authentic thug crooner, Bobby Brown) and 'Murder Me' display his patented hip-hop growl. In keeping with Murder Inc.'s domination of mainstream airwaves, the vibe here is strictly midtempo R&B, aside from the exceedingly shrill synth-and-drum-machine styling of the Neptunes-laced 'Pop N****s' and the prefab grimness that permeates 'The Warning.' Young'uns mightn't notice, but the samples utilized on The Last Temptation, including Toto's 'Africa' (on 'Murder Reigns') and 'Funky Sensation' (on the title track), are extremely unsubtle. Those who were raised on foundation hip-hop might do better to look elsewhere.
Buyer Reviews : Man, y'all are dissin' Ja way too much. First off I'll admit the 5th star was a tad generous because 'The Last Temptation' isn't anywhere close to being as classic as albums like Jay-Z's 'Blueprint 2' but I decided give it to him because Ja's flow and beats are a lot hotter than nearly anyone else in this ... up commerialized industry. In fact next to DMX, Jay-Z and maybe Nas he's the dopest MC in the game. So stop hatin'.I mean [darn], you can't be callin Rule a sell out and then go and listen to your P. Diddy, Baby and Eminem cd's. Yeah, Ja's signature is to mix hip hop wit a little bit of R+B flavor for most of his hits but that doesn't mean he's a sell out. Not every song has to be hardcore gangsta rap. Even rappers like N.W.A, Snoop Dogg, Biggie, 2pac and even DMX have a lot of songs wit softer beats and girls on tht hook. Besides who has ever mixed the 2 flavors together as well as Ja Rule?!!! At least he's using the formula right and if it isn't tight then why is the whole rap industry copying it?!!!Plus if you actually listened to Ja's albums all the way through you'd see he does have some hardcore tracks. And about the way he sometimes uses a singing-like flow, sometimes it just fits the beat better. Look at Nate Dogg or Snoop(especially on 'G Thang'). Besides if you actually listen to rap cd's you'd see almost every rapper does that once in a while: Even DMX, listen to 'We Right Here' or 'When I'm Nothing' (not to dis Dark Man X those songs are off the hook). Aiiight, now that that's out the way let me tell y'all bout the hot tracks: First off 'Thug Lovin' wit B. Brown has to Ja's all time dopest track, the beat is off the hook and B. Brown fits the hook perfectly. Ya can't knock that track. Another tight joint is 'The Pledge' wit Nas and Ashanti. I love the way they merge 2Pac in at the end.I have to say though I'm tired of rappers sayin they're Pac. Pac is the all-time greatest and no one else is even close to him, PERIOD. Another one of Ja's best is 'The Warning' this should be the 3rd single fa sho. Other good tracks are Destiny, The Last Temptation and Mesmerize wit the steaming hot Ashanti. The main problem wit this album is it is waaaaay too short and doesn't have a lot of creative tracks, probably because it was made in less than a month. And where's I.G.? He's only a co-producer on this album. Overall Pain is Love is better but this is still a another great album by the Rule. It's a [darn] shame he's retiring at only 24. Who knows what he could do. Look for his last double album:'Veni Vetti Vecci The Movie' -Da Func Doc. I'm out. Holla at ya dogs!!!
