While fans of Quality Control's bright sound will still find much to enjoy here, J5's sophomore offering does a good job at extending their sound. Opening with 'Freedom,' a quiet yet focused call to action, Power in Numbers presents a slightly darker vision of hip-hop nirvana than the group offered first time around. In keeping with the album's title, J5 has also expanded its crew--Percy P. (of the early-'90s underground group, Double XX Posse) and Big Daddy Kane help wreck the G Rap-esque 'A Day at the Races,' and the always game alterna-diva, Nelly Furtado, lends a surprisingly effective pop edge to the bouncy 'Thin Line.' On the production end of things, Juju of the Beatnuts adds his special blend of Colombian madness to the jazzy 'If You Only Knew' and the considerably bleaker 'One of Them.'
Buyer Reviews : Let me tell you, I've listened to a LOT of hip hop records in the past 5 years. I used to think that I would get tired of listening to Quality Control after so many times of playing the disc through in my car, but I still love it. 'Power in Numbers,' somehow surpassed my expectations. Cut Chemist and Numark are production geniuses, and the lyrics that the group came up with for this album are perfect. 'Thin Line' nearly brought tears to my eyes when I heard it for the first time. Nelly Furtado's voice blends flawlessly with the chords Cut chose. 'A Day at the Races' shows off just how good the crew is as individual lyricists. You get everything from the record: creative beats, unusual sounds, on-point verses, and harmony. It's like as if someone found a bright flower growing in the crack of a dirty gutter. The messages in the songs are so refreshing that they are actually out of place compared to the mass produced garbage many people call rap. Buy this.....Even if you've never bought a hip-hop album in your entire life, you will not be sorry.
