Backed by her quicksilver combo of bassist John Clayton, drummer Jeff Hamilton, and guitarist John Pisano (on some tracks), Krall's jazz heritage comes through loud and clear on this program of standards, ballads, and bossa novas. On Peggy Lee's 'I Love Being Here with You,' Bob Dorough's 'Devil May Care,' and Frank Sinatra's 'Fly Me to the Moon,' Krall's snappy, postbop piano playing shows off her debt to Nat 'King' Cole and Jimmy Rowles. Her cool contralto vocals are illuminated by the Orchestre Symphonique Europeen, under the direction of Alan Broadbent, as well as the London Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Claus Ogerman. Krall's deep take on Joni Mitchell's 'A Case of You' is a great choice for an encore, and the CD concludes with Billy Joel's 'Just the Way You Are' (a studio track from a film called The Guru), with tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker and bassist Christian McBride. This collection only hints at what Diana Krall has to offer in the future.
Buyer Reviews : This is one of the finest live recordings of any artist I have ever heard. The wonderful stylings of the lovely and all so talented jazz pianist and vocalist Diana Krall were made for a chilly winter night in Paris. But the winter night does not detract from the warmth of this amazing technical achievement. This is indeed the romantic 'City of Lights', but it is the Paris of small cafe's at night and lovers strolling by the Eiffel Tower. Recorded at the Olympia in November of 2001 there is an intimate feel to this live recording that is warm and magical.
Diana gives us both the light and breezy jazz and the haunting ballads we have come to love. Long time producer Tommy Lipuma has done the impossible here by bringing us up close to Diana and these great musicians. From the very beginning of this recording we feel like we are ten feet away from the stage at the Olympia ouselves, able to hear Diana whisper. It is a joyful recording full of respect for the music itself, which is indeed terrific.
You can see from the list above the great mix of jazz and pop standards but what Diana does with some of these songs you simply have to hear for yourself to truly appreciate. Claus Ogerman is here as are Anthony Wilson on guitar, John Clayton on bass, and Jeff Hamilton on drums. Diana gives us a playful and laughing atmosphere to this night beginning with Peggy Lee's 'I Love Being Here With You' and moving through the marvelous 'Let's Fall in Love' and 'Indeed I Do'.
Things turn romantic (this is Paris, after all) when Diana slows things down and turns her 'Look of Love' into a sensual song of longing with her emotional voice. Things turn back to breezy again when she does a version of 'East of the Sun (and West of the Moon)' that rivals Sinatra and Tommy Dorsey in it's greatness. What follows may be a total suprise to some, as Diana does the old Sinatra song, 'I've Got You Under My Skin'.
With an orchestral opening highlighted by violins she turns this song 180 degrees until it is a sad lament of a love we can't make go away, no matter how much we may need to. The rich and deeply romantic song of a love lost that haunts us, 'Maybe You'll Be There' folllows before we're back with Diana's delightful phrasing in ''S Wonderful'.
Frank makes one more appearance before we're done with a truly joyous rendition of 'Fly Me to the Moon'. It may be getting a little chilly on this November night in Paris but you'd never know it from the warmth coming from Diana and her pals so we hang around for two additional songs; the softly beautiful Joni Mitchell song, 'A Case of You', and Billy Joel's 'Just the Way You Are'.
This live recording is a great achievement both in a technical sense, and as an artistic showcase for the unique musical talent of Diana Krall. This is one live recording that is worth owning. A truly exquisite recording we get to attend just a few feet away, this is a table for two in the most romantic city in the world with the incomparable Diana Krall. You just can't miss it!
