It's this that attracts people to her music, and The Book of Secrets is no exception, whether it's the lazy rhythms of 'Marco Polo,' the sober joy of 'The Mummers' Dance,' the poignancy of 'Skellig' or 'Dante's Prayer,' or the drama of Alfred Noyes's 'The Highwayman.' 'The Highwayman' is a particularly strong effort, especially in comparison to her earlier setting of 'The Lady of Shalott'; McKennitt has become much more skilled at musical narrative. This is music that can be enjoyed on many levels, from McKennitt's growing skill as a composer to the deeper questions posed by her lyrics.
Buyer Reviews : Book Of Secrets is my favorite Lorenna record to date. Here she toys with so many different sounds that it's hard to catagorize her style of music. She fuses everything from Celtic to Middle Eastern to even Egyptian, as heard most evidently on Marco Polo, a very upbeat song with little vocals but much feelings. She even sings the widely acclaimed poem by Alfred Noyes, better known as The Highwayman, which is a very long tune that clocks in at (10:19) but one that will leave you sitting on the edge of your seat in suspense. It plays out as an emotional story of tragic love entangled with blood and death as its horrid end unravels before your eye. It's all very intense! Another to listen for is Night Ride Across The Caucasus and Dante's Prayer, which starts off beautifully with the haunting bass line of munks leading you into a saddened tale of love.
As heard throughout the album I promise that you'll never once grow tired of its many influences. If you're new to McKennitt's music than I suggest starting out with this. And if you're an old fan than keep on listening. It's a beautiful journey to many mystifying lands.
Also check out The Mask And Mirror where you can find the haunting Mystic's Dream.
