'All Souls Night' begins the album, with dance-like rhythms and McKennitt's wonderful voice singing about the Celtic New Year. Other features include a musical setting of Tennyson's 'Lady of Shalott', which, while not as sophisticated as Noyes' 'The Highwayman' on The Book of Secrets, is an enchanting listen. There's also an interesting rendition of 'Greensleeves' and the Spanish-flavored 'Tango to Evora', as well as the haunting 'Courtyard Lullaby' and the wistful 'The Old Ways'. A setting of words from Shakespeare's Cymbeline closes the album, which focuses thematically on life, death, and the borders between them.
Buyer Reviews : 'All Souls Night' was my first exposure to this wonderful woman's voice. I remember hearing it on a local radio station in '91 and not knowing who the heck sang this haunting song.
Although 'Mask and the Mirror' was the first album I had bought by Loreena McKennitt, 'The Visit', specifically 'All Souls Night' was what made me became a fan of Loreena Mckennitt's music. I get chills down my spine when I listen to Loreena's beautiful rendition of 'Greensleeves' which ironically I am listening to as of now while I write this review.
I have yet to find a song that I do not like of Loreena Kennitt's. Everything she sings turns into a pot of gold for my ears. I started listening to Loreena McKennitt in high school and as an adult out of college I still listen to her. I rarely find artists that I can remain as faithful to as I have with Loreena McKennitt, but of course it is hard to find artists whose music makes me as happy as I am.
