Buyer Reviews : Yeah, like many of you I couldn't wait to pick up this disc. I'm guessing if you're reading this that you're probably into Mr. Show...and I would say that it doesn't get much better than that on TV.
However, David Cross the stand-up comic is a lot different than David Cross, one half of Bob and David. His humor is much more literal, in-your-face. This isn't a bad thing, by any means...his one hour HBO special 'The Pride is Back' was also fantastic in my opinion. Cross has no problem really working for his laughs, and he definitely has a purpose with his comedy. In 'The Pride is Back' he pokes fun at a lot of institutional stuff - and he's really good at making his stance VERY clear, yet keeping it funny.
On these two new discs, however, Cross seems to go overboard at times. It seems like he's gone from drawing pieces of material from what he disagrees with to having his entire show defined by what he hates. Where before he would allude to the silliness and illogical nature of religious fanaticism, now it seems like he wants to take enormous 20-minute segments to completely destory EVERY MINOR aspect of everything that he doesn't like.
that's not to say that there aren't great bits in these discs, because there definitely are, but I don't think there's anything as imaginative as, say, the dating handbook bit or the sick kids at airports bit in 'The Pride is Back'. Cross instead simply skewers a lot of easy targets, and takes his time doing so. There's no doubt that the guy is really funny and original, but this set doesn't illustrate that nearly as well as past material. Worth picking up, but if you don't have the Mr. Show DVD's I'd get those instead!
