Sort of like a trashier, more casual and less musical Beck, vocalist-guitarist Black and guitarist-vocalist Kyle Gass, with help from Foo Fighter Dave Grohl, Redd Kross's Steve McDonald, and Page McConnell of Phish, deliver oddball musings that will appeal mostly to fans of the talented Black, whose earned a following thanks to memorable, frenetic turns in the films Hi Fidelity and Jesus' Son. The songs and 'bits' include the wonderfully, intentionally melodramatic 'Wonderboy,' Black ordering 'four Chicken McNuggets' on 'Drive Thru,' and the funny ode to vocalist Ronnie James Dio, where Black observes, 'Dio has rocked for a very long time / Now it's time for him to pass the torch.' With often intentionally droll and dumb humor smartly executed like a latter-day version of Bob & Doug McKenzie with a dash of Spinal Tap, this more-comedy-than-rock debut is likely to achieve cult status.
Buyer Reviews : I wasn't sure what to expect here. I'm a big fan of Jack Black, he's hilarious in every interview I've seen of him, and every movie he's been in, and he's also a very talented singer and guitarist. So, I wanted to see what this album was like.
Well, first off, this is funny stuff. The lyrics are goofy, dirty, and just plain fun. However, this album just feels kind of thrown together. 'Wonderboy' and 'Tribute' are both fantastic songs. Funny lyrics, great music, they're just perfect (they even got mainstream attention, which I never would have expected). But, a lot of this album just seems like a bunch of small jokes and loose ideas put to music. Plus, the songs are all pretty short, half of them are under two minutes. It almost feels like a grindcore album, with all the short songs.
In the case of a 'joke album', one might not expect such good musicianship, but one thing this album has without question is some great music. The acoustic guitarwork is all very well-done, and pretty creative (unlike Jimmy Fallon and Adam Sandler, who just do bar chords). Kyle gass is a great guitarist, with more than a little experience in classical guitar. Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters steps up for drum duties, and does a great job as always. He also plays guitar on occasion throughout the album.
Besides the aforementioned two, there are a few other great songs here. 'Rock your Socks' does just that. Great hard rocking tune. Impressive drumwork from Dave, and Kyle's classical solo rules. '...Her Gently' is odd, in that it has the feel of an emotional ballad, yet manages to be really funny at the same time. I'm guessing that's hard to do. 'City Hall' is a bit too long, but a great closer, with some great music (featuring some fast rhythms that almost sound like Slayer unplugged). The other songs have funny lyrics, but are really too short to be anything. It almost seems like they were just making stuff up as they were going along.
I'm sure I'm putting WAY too much rational thought into this, but I really think this album needed a bit more time put into it. These guys are obviously capable of making a great song, so they need to just sit down and crank out a whole album of them. This was a decent start, but come on Jack and Kyle, next time you gotta blow us away with a masterpiece. I know you can do it! I look forward to the next album, I feel it's gonna be great.
