The rootsy singer-songwriter with the silken tenor isn't merely genuflecting at the altar of his musical heroes, as here he shows more quirky imagination and inventive musicianship than on any of his earlier efforts. That said, 'Diamonds on the Inside' is painted with the same brush that Bob Dylan used on 'I Shall Be Released,' but Harper adds his own Biblical aphorisms to make the song his own. Most of the songs display Harper's growth as a poet, as he ponders the dualities of life and love in tunes like the disturbing 'Touch from Your Lust' and the disquietingly lyrical 'Amen Omen.' Harper is compelled to sing what is in his heart and to do what he can to make the world a better place. Witness the Marley-like 'With My Own Two Hands.' The only misstep on the whole disc is the overly humid orchestration of 'When She Believes.' --Jaan Uhelszki
Buyer Reviews : WITH MY OWN TWO HANDS (4/5) - the first single, doesnt sound anything like the rest of the album, still rocks in a reggae sort of way WHEN ITS GOOD (hellofalotmorethan5/5) - i never knew a song could really rock out without having any drums whatsoever, its got a live sound to it DIAMONDS ON THE INSIDE (4.5/5) - very radio friendly, will probably be the next single
TOUCH FROM YOUR LUST (4.5/5) - the first hard song, lyrics are great, guitar is just as good WHEN SHE BELIEVES (5/5) - the beginning of a string of amazing tunes, who would have thought a song based around accordions would be so good? what can i say, its beautiful BRING THE FUNK (hellofalotmorethan5/5) - being a james brown and chili peppers fan, i love funk. this is in my opinion one of his best songs, turn it up BROWN EYED BLUES (5/5) - one of those songs that will be a staple in his live show, funky and classic ben harper, try not to sit down during this one EVERYTHING (5/5) - softer, but still makes you nod your head, a great beat throughout the song AMEN OMEN (hellofalotmorethan5/5) - cant wait to hear this live, he puts his heart and soul into this song, great guitar, great chorus, even better vocals from ben TEMPORARY REMEDY (5/5) - turn it up, a great hard song with cool guitar effects SO HIGH SO LOW (hellofalotmorethan5/5) - dont let the start fool you, acoustics at the start give way to an axl rose like scream and rock hard electric guitar work, fast paced and amazing BLESSED TO BE A WITNESS (3.5/5) - if possible, this is the disappointment of the album, still has great vocals from harper. its soft with no guitar PICTURE OF JESUS (4.5/5) - the surprise on this cd. the whole song is ben singing, backed up by beautiful humming (huh-la-la, huh-la-la, hmmmmm), almost catchy SHES ONLY HAPPY IN THE SUN (5/5) - beautiful song but sad, ben singing at his best, a soft ballad thats a perfect closer
the first single is totally different and isnt nearly as good as the rest of the album. there is definitely no filler. ben checks into countless different genres so even if youre not going to buy the album, at least check out the best songs WHEN ITS GOOD, BRING THE FUNK, AMEN OMEN, SO HIGH SO LOW cuz these will get you hooked
