All right, John Mayall and Eric Clapton are white and British. But who cares, as long as they play as soulfully and rawly as in this album? After the publishing of this record, there were spontaneous paintings on the walls of London procclaiming 'Clapton is God'. Understandably. In my opinion, he's never played as intensely as in this album, except for his brief stint at Derek & the Dominoes. (Guitarists might be interested in the fact that Eric was playing a Gibson Les Paul through a Marshall amp at that time.) The covers of Freddie King's songs are exceptional and the sound of the album is very much 'british 60s'. Mayall is obviously not as good a singer as Muddy Waters, but he's undoubtedly one of the best bandleaders in the world and knows how to get the maximum out of his musicians. I must have heard this record more than a thousand times and almost know it by heart. It ignited in me an unstoppable desire to play blues guitar and buy everything related to Clapton and Mayall. Now I know how to play 'Hideaway's guitar part by heart... So beware if you buy this album, it is likely to turn you into a die-hard blues fanatic. At least that's what it did with me.
