Buyer Reviews : When the Smallville television series premiered in the fall of 2001, I decided to give it a shot, out of pure curiosity. Having grown up with Superman comics and the films, the idea of there being a show centered around the life of a teenage Clark Kent, before he became the hero, was enough of a hook. Over time, the series has turned some of the established mythology on its ear, while at the same time, staying true to the character.
Musically, the producers decided to steer clear of an orchestral theme for the show. Series composer Mark Snow did create a theme for the show, however, the producers went another way. Instead Remy Zero's 'Save Me' has become the series calling card each week. Just as other 'teen drama' shows like Felicity, Dawson's Creek, and yes Beverly Hills 90210 each week features songs from popular bands of the moment, that act as a tie in to the story, so does Smallville.
As for the first (?) compilation of songs from Smallville, the CD is pretty good. I have to say that 'Save Me' has grown on me over time. It took a bit of time for me to get used to it though. The CD presents the full 4:01 version of the song. Among the other songs that stand out on the soundtrack are 'Superman (It's not easy)' by Five For Fighting that's VERY tied to the future hero. Steadman's 'Wave Goodbye' and Eva Cassidy's cover of 'Time After Time' tie in with Clark's love for Lana Lang..This is not a bad compilation. The songs, for the most part, can be connected to the show in some way. If this CD does well, I'm sure a sequel album will follow...as will a score CD, down the road, I'm sure. I would also say that you don't have to like the series to get something from this particular release
The CD also has enhanced media content, for those with a PC, including music performances by Remy Zero and VonRay, a 3-D map of Smallville, and previews of upcoming novel tie-ins and the comic book based on the series. Please take note that some of this content will not work on a MAC
