Scarlet's Walk, the follow-up to her critically acclaimed covers LP, Strange Little Girls, was written on a cross-country road trip shortly after the terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C. Over the course of 3,000 miles and 18 tracks, the crimson-haired singer encounters rogue lovers ('A Sorta Fairytale'), reformed porn stars ('Amber Waves'), and an entire cast of characters who embody the spirit of a country suddenly searching for an identity. The album serves as both an ambitious travelogue and as a graceful rejoinder to the bitterness and frustration that inspired it, with Amos wading through swells of sadness ('I Can't See New York'), anger ('Don't Make Me Come to Vegas'), and insecurity ('Your Cloud') with velvety grace.
Buyer Reviews : Tori Amos's new album, Scarlet's Walk, is a sonic novel about a woman named Scarlet (Tori's 'alter-ego') who travels through America in a road-trip and discovers things about herself, her relationships, and America as a whole. 9/11 was a huge inspiration in this, and that is greatly displayed in 'I can't see new york,' which is a song about Scarlet witnessing the plane-crash from another plane in the sky. It is best to listen to this album along with reading 'Scarlet's Bio' (written by Neil Gaiman) which can be found at many Tori websites... It helps explain what the album is about as far as the 'journey goes.'
Now, as far as quality goes - this is one of Tori's best albums. All of her albums are special in their own way, and this one is definitely one of the most thought-provoking and entrancing. It's a lyrical and musical masterpeice, basically. Every single song will take you into another world, and you'll be taken by Tori's amazing voice and the intricate mixing of the instrumentation.
Highlights for me on this album include the following:
A Sorta Fairytale » This definitely deserves its single-status. It's amazing and beautiful. The video is incredible. The first time I saw it I was completely surprised, which is just like Tori.
Carbon » This is my FAVORITE song on the album. It reminds me a lot of her song 'Siren,' but it's still got it's own unique individuality. The best part is the end when she sings 'Keep your eyes on the horizon.' Beautiful.
Pancake » This is definitely going to become a tori classic and I can already see the audience going nuts when she sings this live. The song is pure Tori.
I Can't See New York » Wow. I can't even find the words. It's just simply brilliant.
Taxi Ride » When I first got this album, this song stuck out to me and it still does. It's amazing and I hope she sings it live when I see her in concert!
Virginia » This is my second favorite song on the album. It's just so amazing and I love when she goes 'Oh, Virginia, you can't even remember your name.'
Other highlights include Amber Waves, Strange, Your Cloud, and Scarlet's Walk.
I highly reccomend this album to anyone considering it. Get it! Go, now!
