Recorded in Tucson with a stellar band that includes Calexico's Joey Burns and John Convertino, Blacklisted charms you with its haunting, reverb-soaked songs, most of which were written by Case herself. The lyrics are impressionistic and, at times, inscrutable. 'Fast train, where do your passengers wait?' she sings in the title song. 'What's at the heart of your engine's rage?' While it's not always clear what Case is getting at, the overall mood of the album is one of loss and melancholy. Soaring above it all is Case's remarkable Patsy Cline-meets-Judy Garland voice, which she uses to great effect on the album's two torchy cover songs: Sarah Vaughan's 'Look for Me (I'll Be Around)' and Aretha Franklin's 'Running Out of Fools.' --David Hill
Buyer Reviews : The first time I heard her, I thought 'Loretta Lynn Struck By Lightning!'. I have to confess not many voices simply grab hold of me like that. At the risk of sounding utterly mysogynistic, she's one of the few female vocalists today who really captivate me. Where alot of singers are victims of their own marketing, this lady has true class.
Though I thought her first album, THE VIRGINIAN somewhat spotty, I was blown away by FURNACE ROOM LULLABYE. And now this. Like her last effort, her songwriting skills are top notch as evidenced on the opener, 'Things That Scare Me'. 'Deep Red Bells' lives up to it's songtitle and 'I Wish I Was The Moon' takes my breath away. In terms of the covers, I have say her take on 'Running Out Of Fools' ranks as the best recorded version I've ever heard and she's totally in her element with menacing torch songs like 'Look For Me'. Guitars, banjo, cello and yes folks---the saw, make for an eerily creepy 'Pretty Girls'. In terms of mood, there's definitely a long lost, David Lynch soundtrack feel going on. Whether you're an Urban Cowboy on the 'Alt Country' bandwagon or just someone looking for good old fashioned great singing, here's one of the best albums of the year.
