The Brooklyn quartet makes acoustic latticework of guitars, mandolins, piano, an array of orchestral instruments, and the floating voice of Sally Ellyson, which is equally suited to whisper-quiet tunes like the brief opener, 'Lord, Blow Out the Moon Please,' as it is to 'Stupid Mouth Shut' and the band’s boisterous rendition of 'The Cuckoo.' Hem’s mellowness follows a post-punk New Age bend in the neo-folk road (especially on the sentimental 'Burying Song'), but mostly the lyrics recall early Cowboy Junkies, the Hank Dogs, and the Be Good Tanyas. 'All That I’m Good For' combines pedal steel with a full complement of strings to create an almost Lambchop level of rustic richness-—while Ellyson’s voice goes from absolute glassy-lake calm to heights Sarah McLachlan would recognize.
Buyer Reviews : It is always so cool when you discover a great piece of art all by yourself and you know you have! I wandered into an little artsy gift store in the Pacific Northwest town called Yachats which is a little village on the coast and heard the most beautiful music I'd heard in a long time. Since I live there I know that I wasn't hypnotized by the beautiful surroundings or just mesmerized by the moment in time, in fact I was hurrying to find some nice stationery so I could write a note. The music stopped me in my tracks. I inquired as to the CD that was playing and was compelled to buy it. I've had it for 3 weeks now and play it every day. It is inspiring and haunting at the same time. I would recommend this music to anyone who enjoys the perfect symetry of a gentle but strong voice with smooth instrumentals that will give you pause to wonder what some of the instruments are.
