Even when questioning his young life, Mayer's doubts come off glib; not one second of 'Why Georgia' convinces that 'the stirring in my soul' keeps the artiste awake at night. Between his Dave Matthews-wannabe vocals and the accomplished but bland lite rock of his band, he could be just as easily offering tunes for hire to a coming-of-age network series as making a stand for himself and his worldview. The premise of 'City Love'--that Mayer couldn't find his way around Manhattan until finding a girlfriend to root him to the place--is nice but not edifying. 'My Stupid Mouth' is similarly fuzzy; letting us in on just what he said to alienate a dinner partner would've gone a long way toward fleshing out the song's pat self-deprecation. Ultimately, Mayer comes off less like a commiserating friend than a blabbermouth who's forever forgetting there's someone else in the room. And instead of whining about a discarded lunch box ('83'), dude, learn to brown-bag it the way the rest of us did.
Buyer Reviews : This CD is awesome!! I can't stop listening to it!! I was first introduced to John Mayer's music in an unlikely spot--my bio room. My teacher would play his CD all the time and I got curious after hearing a lot of stuff that I liked, so I went out and bought the album. All of the songs on the album are worthwhile and most are very relatable to my life. John is so talented!! He writes brilliantly crafted songs, is an amazing guitarist, and has a smooth and distinguishing voice. Analysis of the songs:
1. No Such Thing: the 1st single off the album. I really, really like this song and it was one of the initial reasons I bought the album.
2. Why Georgia: one of my favorites, if not my favorite. The melody is great and the words are touching to me...I can relate well.
3. My Stupid Mouth: the other reason I bought 'Room For Squares'. Another one of my favorites. I relate very well to the idea in this song of being self-conscious and wanting people to like you.
4. Your Body Is A Wonderland: Great song...another of my favorites. Easy to sing along to and somewhat of a tenderness to it.
5. Neon: Mayer's guitar skills show a lot in this one. Also easy to sing along to...great song.
6. City Love: not my favorite on the album...but only because the others on the album are so good. If this were on most other albums, it would be one of my favorites. Good song.
7. 83: Very relatable...about wanting to go back to the past when things were easier...how true. John Mayer's vocals sound really good in this one as well as the guitars.
8. 3x5: One of my favorites...Mayer's voice sounds extra smooth and the tune is very nice. A lot going on in this song but it all blends nicely...it doesn't sound like too much is happening at once.
9. Love Song For No One: Alson very relatable...about not wanting to be alone anymore. In my case, I understand this a lot because Mayer discusses being in his room writing about hypothetical lovers...which is something I do in my own songs until I find someone.
10. Back To You: One of my favorites...a lot of people's favorite. Great melody and it's impossible not to sing along to.
11. Great Indoors: Touching. A good song.
12. Not Myself: Another very good song. A lot of people relate well to this one.
13. Null song...perhaps to avoid bad luck??
14. St. Patrick's Day: Another of my favorites (what can I say? I have a lot :) ) The tune is very nice and the guitar playing also shows itself a lot in this. A combination of many sounds and instruments. Great blend.
In conclusion, 'Room for Squares' is a great album for someone of any musical taste and I have not met a single person who hasn't at least enjoyed the album. Most people I have spoken to about the album have loved it. John Mayer is amazing and you should DEFINITELY buy this album!!
