Branch offers a well-produced pastiche of chiming and strumming guitars, hip-hop-lite beats, quiet-verse-to-louder-chorus templates, and positive thinking. At her best--'If She Only Knew,' a propulsive love note to an ex--she rivals the likes of Sixpence None the Richer as likable radio-aimed fare. Catchy and self-expressive while breaking absolutely no ground, Branch also echoes everyone from label-mate Alanis Morissette to the solo Belinda Carlisle. She dies just a little in this crazy mixed-up world, escapes to her secret garden for sunshine in the pouring rain, and ultimately finds her reflection getting clearer. The Spirit Room could be the next bit of pop philosophy to dazzle mainstream audiences.
Buyer Reviews : This is whole pre-package, cutesy female pop/rock act trend has to go. It is bad enough knowing that there is Advil (as in the ibruprofen drug) Lavigne singing 'Complicated' (what the heck does she know about what's complicated when she is only a teenager?). Vanessa Carlton is being compared to Tori Amos which greatly offends me when Vanessa has about as much talent as a pianist as a sea monkey. But before Vanessa and Advil, Michelle Branch came on the scene with her awful impersonation of Spongebob Squarepants and Minnie Mouse combined. Someone up there must not like me if I am having someone like Michelle Branch shoved down my throat as being the alternative to Britney Spears. I don't think so. You want an alternative to Britney Spears, go listen to PJ Harvey and Garbage. Michelle Branch ain't the antidote to the chipmunk. She is only the virus that spreads the disease. If only Courtney Love would clean house with those two twits as her broom and mop. Pop music today is getting worse and worse, especially with these cutesy female pop/rock acts like Michelle Branch.
