This is the Way 'Let It Be' should have sounded when it was first released. Although I am confident that if the Beatles were able to hear this CD as released, they would have nitpicks that annoyed them about it, I am also confident that this is far closer to their original conception of 'Let It Be' than we have ever heard before. Although the fillers 'Maggie Mae' and 'Dig It' are notably (and I think, thankfully) absent, as is the banter from the rooftop, I think this is a much more pure album in concept, and certainly the digital processing has cleaned it up a lot. Gone are all the traces of 'Spectorization' the guys (especially Paul) hated. Although never one of my favorites 'The Long And Winding Road' sounds especially better without the extras. Standouts for me are 'Get Back' (although I do kind of miss the rooftop chatter), 'One After 909', which sounds wonderful: it is now so much more polished and crisp than ever before, 'I Me Mine', on which George and the guitar work sound especially powerful and the title track, 'Let It Be', which is, evidently, a combination of edits, featuring the George solo from the movie, which I have always preferred above all the other solos (especially the John solo on the original LP) which sounds incredibly sharp. Ringo's drum part seems more pronounced and crisp, and the whole song comes across as the melodic masterpiece that it is. Downsides for me are 'I've Got a Feeling,' which, though never a personal favorite, is particularly raw to an uncomfortable degree, especially vocally, and the bonus CD 'Fly On The Wall,' which could have been a good 'alternate takes' or 'deleted tracks' CD. Instead it is really a very disjointed set of snippets of different songs some of which you have heard before, and some you probably haven't (included are some songs that would shortly become solo releases of former Beatles, notably 'All Things Must Pass'). The bonus is worth listening to about one time for a historical perspective, but in my judgment that's about it. There are things that long time Beatles fans such as myself would change about this CD, but overall it is indispensable and deserves to be on every music lover's CD rack. Buy it today! (by Robert I. Hedges) What people search: |
