She and coproducer John Parish have opted for a muted approach where guitars and tambourines stir among simple, unadorned rhythms. The singer's once boldly strummed acoustic guitar is here replaced by a more constant tidal flow, with handclaps, gospel-tinged choruses, and an open-barreled bass drum marking time. Chapman even goes trip-hopping on 'In the Dark,' a strangely shadowy highpoint featuring her artfully quavering vocal melody. The jumpy interludes on 'Hard Wired' and the chamber interlude of 'Over in Love' (which is reminiscent of the gorgeous interstitial tunes on Hem's debut) add color. This is an awesomely crafted folk-soul creation for seasoned fans and for those who love Beth Orton and Norah Jones.
Buyer Reviews : What can I say about this remarkable woman and genius of a lyracist? Perhaps if I borrow words from someone more articulate....
'Tracy Chapman released her sixth album Let It Rain, marking another achievement in a 15 year career. Chapman impresses her audience with laid-back beats, mellow tunes and great lyris from a voice that radiates pureness along with simplicity' This is a quote from the Music Reviews section in my college's paper (University of Kentucky) written by ELizabeth Van Kersen who rated Tracey's new album a B plus.
I squealed with delight when I saw the review in our school paper (The Kernel) praising Tracy and I clipped it out for my scrapbook of good memories and anectdoctes an stuff like that. Tracy and I go way back as friends. No, she's never met me and I've never met her but I know her voice. There is a quality to her voice that can best be described as 'honest' - she's an honest voice.
The tunes on this new album are so mellow they are perfect for listening to while I cram for an exam. It's just the kind of mellow, mersmerizing music that does not 'rely on shocking lyrics or ear shredding screams to get her words and feelings across' as the review in my paper says which is very accurate in describing my good friend Tracy.
Tracy is an old familiar voice - yes. Beautiful sadness. That is the epitome of Miss Chapman. Her beauty comes from her endurance and her thriving through that sadness with a hopeful heart.
If you like mellow tunes.... if you like good guitar music and a singer who can become like an old friend to you.... I reccomend this... We've all been in that 'fast car' and had 'a ticket to nowhere'. Sing it Tracy! So bring on the rain! Yeah! You bring it on Tracy cuz you kick.
P.S. Tracy, on the crazy happenchance that you read this... please have a live concert in my Cincinnati Ohio cause it would really make my whole life to see you perform live!
