The Puerto Rican-American tenor's by now familiar rendition of 'God Bless America' won over the hearts of his city, then nation--but took shots from a few cynical critics, too. Rodriguez emerged from the experience with career mentoring from no less than Placido Domingo, and this sophomore release gratifyingly proves that Rodriguez was no marketing fluke. Tellingly, the musician bookends this collection with personal tributes to the singer he obviously hopes to pattern his career after, Mario Lanza, including the unabashed romantic bluster of 'Be My Love,' the song Rodriguez proposed to his wife with. The singer and producer Tom Scott chart a course through a slate of familiar modern ballads and Broadway standards both old (Carousel's 'If I Loved You') and new ('Only Love' and 'She Was There' from The Scarlet Pimpernel). But the album's most intriguing selections are a pair of Spanish language love songs ('Jurame,' 'Solamente Una Vez'), recordings whose warm, sumptuous flavor seems to hint at even brighter horizons for the sturdy tenor and improbable modern American hero. --Jerry McCulley
Buyer Reviews : Greatness, what is the meaning of this word. To be great requires a lot of displicine on your part. You must do what is right for yourself, reqardless of how you feel or your emotional make up.
In this particular case, I think Daniel short changed himself in his choices. He choose the same arranger that he had used on his debut cd. This I feel was a big mistake. The person that he used is not what I would call a who's who in orchestra arranging. There are a lot of tunesmiths that I feel could have done a better job on this project.
Without question, Daniel has that great voice, but there is more to this story than voice alone. There is arranging and repertoire and even engineering. To be able to put all the pieces of the puzzel together is what I would call greatness. The big names like Sinatra and others all knew how to make everything work for them. Daniel needs to learn how to make things work for him.
In conclusion, this cd is a little bit better than the debut cd, but there is miles and miles of improvements that need to be made.
