This set of standards and two new set pieces recalls her pre-'Come-On a My House' days while asserting her ongoing strength at 73. Clooney moves from various shades of romance ('That Old Black Magic,' 'Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe') to a display of comic timing ('Ya Got Class') that suggests she could've developed a second career on the 'legitimate' stage. Supple solos by Matt Cowan (tenor sax) and bandleader Matt Catingub (alto) bring further depth to the likes of 'And the Angels Sing' and 'You Belong to Me.' The single most affecting track, though, is an 'I'll Be Around' that finds Clooney accompanied by Catingub's solo piano--a finer tribute to Frank Sinatra, who defined the song on In the Wee Small Hours, than the two stolid odes to him and the craft.
Buyer Reviews : One of the best singers of our lifetime who continues to prove that she's still at the top of her form is Rosemary Clooney. She makes any song sound beautiful by putting her heart and soul into the lyrics. It's always a pleasure to listen to her voice, it's so relaxing and soothing. This has got to be one of her best CD collections of songs in her many years of recording with the Concord label. I've collected all of her music over the years, and feel this is an instant classic. My all time favorite album is 'Demi-Centennial'. No one can sing these songs like Rosemary. Of course, my favorite song on this new CD is 'Happiness Is A Thing Called Joe'. Only one other performer sings it as beautiful as Rosemary and that's the one and only Judy Garland. Oh, what a fantasy and dream come true it would be if Rosemary & Judy could have done a duet of this song together when Judy was still with us. And Rosemary sounds terrific on 'They Can't Take That Away From Me.' These big band arrangements with Big Kahuna are a return to the styling Rosemary's so well known for. Enjoy these wonderful songs by Rosemary. I know I did.
