Like other reviewers, Chris Rice's music has been a profound part of my Christian experience. As a musician myself, I was always moved closer to worship by those Christian artists who exemplified artistic brilliance and honest songwriting. I took a chance on Chris Rice as the first sign-on to Rocketown Records and have never once been disappointed. Chris's first song, 'The Other Side of the Radio' is about the same thing the title is about, what it's like on the other side of the radio. He admits that he's just another man and no more important because he's on the 'cool' side of the radio, and seems to say that he even feels humbled at the thought of a million people singing along. How often do we hear that from any artist in any genre?! Each track is high-quality and unique, the trademark of Chris Rice's and Monroe Jones' work together. 'Everything's OK' is a widely-appealing song that anybody, non-Christian or Christian, can sing along to when a mood needs to be lifted. I especially love '8th Grade' because in so many ways I remember what it was like in 8th grade, and honestly long sometimes for the days when it was all so simple by comparison. And how many songwriters thing to rhyme 'mysterious' with 'cafeteria'? Fantastic! 'Wonder' is a co-writing venture with Rice and some other artists. A beautiful lyrical hook with a gritty rhythm not present on Chris's other recordings. A nice touch. 'Circle Up' is a beautiful worship 'jig' worthy of being in a book with the greatest camp songs. I particularly can't wait to learn this song on guitar and play at the next possible moment! Chris is a true Christian artist and a true musician. His music is diverse and heartfelt, his singing voice is magnificent and sorely underrated, and he has the honesty and relevance to connect with his audience, Non-Christian or Christian. Several of my non-Christian friends have asked to borrow his CDs from me. What's more, so few artists can put out four solo albums in a row of such quality, and this credit goes both to Chris and his producer Monroe Jones. His music, great to begin with, has grown over the past few years and those of us who have listened to him have benefited the most. Thanks Chris, for being an artist who puts yourself out there for your fans and your friends. Thanks for sharing your doubts, questions and imperfections so that your listeners can know we're not alone in having them. And thanks the most for creating music which God can use to heal and soften even a hard and broken heart like mine. :-) (by Chris Gooley) What people search: |
