Like Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard before him, McGraw craved the artistic freedom and rawer sound he enjoyed with his road boys, and he was correct in thinking the Dancehall Doctors would leave their own honest stamp on the music, as well as a '70s rock & roll feel. Retreating to a studio in upstate New York, they recorded 15 keepers. Only one, a cover of Elton John's 'Tiny Dancer,' lands with a thud, as McGraw tries to duplicate John's vocal nuances and never takes control of the song. But elsewhere, he and the band are surprisingly emotional, soulful, and vulnerable. Together, they turn 'Red Ragtop,' a song about teen lovers who abort their child, into a universal lyric about choices and regrets, and fashion the two songs about revisiting the people and places that shape who you are ('Sing Me Home,' 'Home') into something profound. The album sags in spots, and McGraw and his coproducers misstep in adding faux R&B vocal washes here and there. But this is a good, solid effort to make music and not just the radio charts.
Buyer Reviews : Hi! I am an architect and a writer, 40 years old. In April 2001, I was in Kansas City. I like country music. During my 40 days trip, I heard Tim McGraw's songs and name for the first time. I bought his 'Greatest Hits' album, and 'Set This Circus Down' which has been released on 24th of April coincidentally. When I returned back to Turkey, I listened to them both. It was just my kind of music. So, I ordered all of his CDs from Amazon.com [including] 'Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors' album and the book. The lyrics, music, voice, CD booklet... everything was perfect and well designed. I liked all the songs, but 'Comfort Me', 'I Know How to Love You Well' and 'She's My Kind of Rain' are my best. Now, I am listening the songs while reading the book. They really complete each other and have to be bought together. I am a lucky guy to be in USA and know Tim. He is a world-wide star. I wish, I could watch him and his band DHD on stage in a concert. Maybe, he makes a live recorded concert album (a double one) for his fans. Dear Tim; you know how to make us happy. And we all love you. Long live. God save you. With love and friendship from Turkey.
