Now imagine a young artist from North Carolina whose ambition not only measures itself against such classic comparisons, but shows the promise to transcend them. Tift Merritt's major-label debut finds such promise fulfilled on 'Sunday,' the six-minute centerpiece in which the sweet sensuality of her upper register floats over an organ bedrock and vocal chorus that are pure Southern church. Even when other cuts sound like they could have been preserved in a '70s time capsule--the generic country-rock of 'Diamond Shoes' and the very Stonesy 'Neighborhood'--her vocals have a seductive intimacy that freshens the familiar. The lead guitar of producer Ethan Johns and the keyboards of Benmont Tench (on loan from Tom Petty's Heartbreakers) augment Merritt's band on arrangements that give the material plenty of room to breathe. As a writer, Merritt has some room to grow, but as a singer, she already sounds like one of the greats.
Buyer Reviews : I had the chance to see Tift Merritt live recently. She was amazing. Tift will be a cross-over star, with Top 20 hits on both VHI and the country video channel. Do yourself a favor and buy this CD now, so you can be the one to introduce your friends to Tift Merritt before she becomes a star.
I'm not a country music fan; the closest I come to country music is Lucinda Williams (yes, I know Lucinda's not really country). In fact, comparisons to Lucinda were the only reason I went to Tift's show. After seeing her live and listening to her music, I'm not sure Lucinda Williams is the right comparison for Tift, even though both are in the alt.country/roots rock genre and both are talented songwriters. I think the comparisons are convenient since they share the same label (Lost Highway) and genre. But I just don't hear it. Despite that, I was quickly sold on Tift Merritt.
Probably 50-60 percent of Tift's song are a little too country for my taste. But the remaining 40-50% completely blew me away. I don't care if you label her as country, roots rock, alt.country, americana, or whatever other label you want to put on her, Tift Merritt will be an absolute star. She's a talented songwriter, a solid guitarist, has a gorgeous voice, plays piano and harmonica, has the looks perfect for music video stardom, and is very charismatic during a live show.
If I was more of a country music fan I'm sure I'd give this 5 stars. It's an outstanding debut CD from a talented young singer songwriter who I'm postive you'll hear big things from in the future.
