Ms. Kent Marked the 100th Anniversary of Richard Rodger's Birth with this Stellar Reading of Some of his Greatest Tunes, her Fifth Recorded Opus. | Peter Cincotti
Though his looks are smart enough for frontman in a mass-marketed boy band, teenaged Peter Cincotti's musical soul seems wizened decades beyond his years. The 19-year-old Columbia University sophomore's debut does more than bristle with promise: it delivers both sprightly performances and some unexpectedly sharp songwriting. The album's lean quartet format (bassist David Finck, drummer Kenny Washington, and Scott Kreitzer on tenor sax) is akin to working without a net, but the singer-pianist ambles through this well-chosen slate of ... | Romance on Film/Romance on Broadway
Cabaret singer turned crooner Michael Feinstein continues to pay tribute to the American popular standard in his two-disc set Romance on Film, Romance on Broadway. The first disc features Feinstein in front of a live audience singing mostly well-worn ballads from classic films (exception: you may not immediately associate Michel LeGrand and Alan and Marilyn Bergman's 'How Do You Keep the Music Playing?' with the 1982 Burt Reynolds-Goldie Hawn vehicle Best Friends). The second disc is ... Regular Price : $24.98

 | These Are The Vistas
Here's a major label debut that doesn't disappoint. For starters, Midwestern piano trio the Bad Plus--in the same vein as Dave Douglas or Brad Mehldau--clearly know a thing or two about how to mix pop music with forward-thinking jazz. The group covers Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit,' Blondie's 'Heart of Glass,' and Aphex Twin's 'Flim' with wit, virtuosity, and respect to the originals--these interpretations never sound in the least bit cliched or overwrought. But even the new ... Regular Price : $12.98

 | Alegria
Following the release of the critically acclaimed Footprints Live!, this CD is saxophonist/composer Wayne Shorter's first studio recording as a leader since the Grammy-winning 1994 release, High Life. Shorter is joined by pianists Danilo Perez and Brad Mehldau, bassist John Patitucci, drummers Terri Lyne Carrington and Brian Blade, and percussionist Alex Acuna. Backed by a superb woodwind and brass ensemble, this project offers a comprehensive and sophisticated presentation of Shorter's music, from the Andalusian airs on 'Vendiendo ... | Rural Renewal
From the 1960s to the '80s, the Crusaders--pianist Joe Sample, saxophonist Wilton Felder, drummer Stix Hooper, and trombonist Wayne Henderson--were a triple threat, with their Texas-based blend of jazz, R&B, and soul. Before they broke up, they produced a string of hits, including 'Street Life' with Randy Crawford. This CD marks their long-awaited reunion, with their producer Stewart Levine and trombonist Steve Baxter filling in for Henderson. The recording is a back-to-basics project featuring the group's Houston-honed swing. ... Regular Price : $18.98

 | It Just Happens That Way
This is a great CD. Mindi Abair is the newest and best thing to come out of smooth jazz in a long time. I bought this CD on a whim while scouring the music isles and I am very glad I did. Compared to everything else on the racks it looked like it would be different and would introduce something new and refreshing to my tired jazz collection. Did I mention it's a great CD? Mindi is ... | The Dirty Boogie
Brian Setzer has spent much of his career revving up already hot retro styles to a booming pitch. While this generally worked in his early years with the rockabilly Stray Cats, it largely fails with his swing orchestra. Louis Prima--whose 'Jump Jive an' Wail' is faithfully remade here--wasn't exactly the king of subtlety himself, but even he might have covered his ears at the blare produced by the combination of Setzer's (admittedly sharp) guitar playing and a too-bright horn section. ... | Sinatra Reprise: The Very Good Years
A 20-track collection from the Reprise years that tries to cover too much ground. Very Good Years sweeps from the early 1960s to 1979's 'New York New York,' focusing on the most obvious Sinatra standards. The watchword here isn't art but populism. That's not a problem, really--but it means that serious fans (or those aspiring to be) will be better served elsewhere. It would be a fine introduction for the casual music lover, but so would ...
