By chance,I saw the trio perform at the Monterey World Music festival in 2002. The music starts out fairly slow, almost boring. After a few songs, the pulse of the one drum, the melody of the oud and clarinet really started to be hypnotic. At the end of the set the crowd gave the trio a standing ovation. I bought the CD and played it for a friend who thinks it is great 'massage' music. It ... Regular Price : $17.98

You've got to hand it to the Baha Men. Not only have they made a good living plying freewheeling, playful island music, they've been smart and lucky enough to have a dozen-odd songs placed in movies and television. Perhaps the most surprising thing about Baha Men's Greatest Movie Hits is that several of their admittedly lightweight numbers are more memorable than the films they accompanied (My Father the Hero, anyone?). The Irish Tenors are an acquired taste that, it seems, nearly everyone has acquired. On Home for Christmas, John McDermott, Anthony Kearns, and Ronan Tynan create a stirring seasonal follow-up to their extremely popular self-titled debut of Irish standards. On this disc, we get some of the best-loved holiday songs performed by the tenors in their trademark, Emerald Isle vocal style. Though the disc boasts a 78-piece orchestra, don't expect big-band arrangements on these tunes; if ... Regular Price : $15.98

This is not your stereotypical Arabic/North African CD. If you are used to North African music, you probably have heard Rai, al-Jeel, 'bellydance' or something. Well, this CD will blow you away. The focus of it is Arab-western fusion, and is uniquely north African. You can't help but find yourself dancing to these tracks, and the remixes are especially cool. In fact, the whole CD radiates an aura of coolness. Check it out.

It's ironic that Youssou N'Dour coproduced Specialist in All Styles. After all, it was the emergence of N'Dour's upbeat mbalax music in the early '80s that hurried the passing of Orchestra Baobab, which had been the most popular band in Senegal for 10 years. Baobab's Afro-Latin blend was unique, but it sounded like fond memory next to the in-your-face mbalax. Following up the reissue in 2002 of the legendary 1982 album Pirates Choice, ... For people who know their Senegalese music, Orchestra Baobab's Pirates Choice is the Holy Grail. By the time this music was recorded to four-track in 1982, the immensely popular band had been playing nightly for years at a Dakar club called Baobab. But legendary status in Senegal didn't help the musicians get wider attention--the album wasn't released in Europe until 1987, and it only now comes to the U.S. for the first time. Latin ... Talking Timbuktu is a groundbreaking record that vividly illustrates the Africa-Blues connection in real time. Ali Farka Toure, one of Mali's leading singer-guitarists, has a trance-like, bluesy style that, although deeply rooted in Malian tradition, bears astonishing similarity to that of John Lee Hooker or even Canned Heat. It's a mono-chordal vamp, with repetitive song lines cut with shards of blistering solo runs that shimmer like a desert mirage. Toure may be conversant with some ... Regular Price : $16.98

If Quebec-based Cirque Du Soleil has triumphed by shrewdly goosing international circus traditions and style with an American sense of theatrical scale and marketing flair, the adventurous musical scores of its dazzling productions have always been a crucial part of the mix. Returning from Cirque's 1999 production, Dralion, Italian-born, Canada-based composer Violaine Corradai informs this tale of fallen angel Icarus with a score that leans on a swirling mix of ethnic folk influences suffused with electronic rhythms, autumnal ... On 10, a celebration of Kate Rusby's first decade as a recording artist, she reminds us once again that it's possible to sing ancient ballads about brave knights, fair maidens, rustic villagers, and all the other denizens of Folk Song Land with an immediacy and emotional intensity that are completely modern. Four of the 15 songs here were culled from her earlier CDs; two new songs, 'I Wish' and 'Over You Now,' were composed by Rusby; ... Regular Price : $17.98

The relationship between Eastern European gypsy music and Yiddish klezmer has always been slightly mysterious. As traditional 'outsiders' to Christian village culture, both gypsy and Jewish musicians earned a living in the preindustrial past by integrating local melodies with whatever else was in vogue for weddings, banquets, and other celebrations. The result was plenty of stylistic cross-fertilization, though the particulars are lost to history. According to the French-based ensemble Les Yeux Noirs, however, the paths of the ...
