I've never bough a Faith Hill album until now, and the main reason I did was because I was curious about her cover of Angie Aparo's masterpiece 'Cry.' Faith Hill did a wonderful job on this piece, but I still prefer Angie Aparo's rendition. I do not think this album has much country flair to offer, except maybe on one or two songs. I think some music stores are still categorizing her as a ... Regular Price : $18.98

The Dixie Chicks aren't old enough to remember when radio programmed pop records next to country, rock, folk, and beyond, but their Texas DNA tells them that's the way music was meant to be heard. On Home, which they coproduced in Austin with Lloyd Maines, the father of lead singer Natalie Maines, they strip off the star-making gloss of Nashville and get down to the meat of the matter, turning out an acoustic record that gives a big ... In the early '70s, the original Circle teamed the Dirt Band, a group of longhaired young country-rockers, with several country and bluegrass legends. In an era of polarization between young and old, it introduced countless baby boomers to that music, paving the way for the recent triumph of the O Brother, Where Art Thou soundtrack. This time, the Dirt Band reunites with Jimmy Martin, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, veterans of the first ... Regular Price : $19.98

On 1997's El Corazón, Steve Earle wished for the return of Woody Guthrie to a world sorely lacking voices of righteous dissent. Here, Earle stops pining for ghosts and gruffly makes his own claim to the agit-folk crown. The controversial 'John Walker's Blues' drew attention to the album and the ire of many who misunderstood it, but it's only one of many topical tunes on a disc that issues a kind of call to arms: over the distorted ... Nashville's loss is Kim Richey's gain. Though she has written chart-topping hits for Radney Foster and Trisha Yearwood and pursued a recording career on the fringes of the country mainstream, her fourth and best album sounds like a fresh start. It certainly doesn't sound like contemporary country, as the artist and producer Bill Bottrell (who helmed similarly creative breakthroughs by Sheryl Crow and Shelby Lynne) collaborate on a sensually bluesy song cycle that shows a determination ... Former Whiskeytown frontman Ryan Adams claims to have written and recorded enough songs over the past several years to fill a four-CD collection--and that's in addition to his acclaimed 2001 breakthrough Gold. Wisely, Adams decided to skip the box set--hey, he's only 27--and issue a sort of 'best of' compilation comprising 13 unreleased demos. Recorded at four different studio sessions in Nashville, Los Angeles, and Stockholm, with a cast of musicians that includes his road band the ... Regular Price : $13.98

Album 2 for the Aussie transplant and former member of the Ranch kicks harder than his debut and fulfills Keith Urban's goal of capturing the elusive 'band feel.' The solid arrangements are particularly well tailored to Darryl Brown's ruptured romance ballad 'You Think of Me' and the swampy 'You Look Good in My Shirt.' Urban catches fire lyrically on the moving 'Song for Dad' and 'What About Me,' a cautionary view of selflessness he ... Regular Price : $18.98

Buddy Miller, whose self-titled album with wife Julie won Album of the Year honors at the inaugural Americana Awards show in 2002, has been quietly changing Nashville with his gutbucket work as a songwriter, vocalist, sideman, and producer. His albums have served as an anchoring consciousness for country's roots, while his raw, twangy songs, filled with palpable heartache, have made their way into mainstream fare by the likes of the Dixie Chicks and Lee Ann Womack. Thanks to Jerry Garcia's participation, Old & in the Way's self-titled 1975 one-shot album was enormously popular--essentially, it made bluegrass music safe for post-Woodstock hippies. By mixing traditional numbers, pop covers, and catchy originals, the Grateful Dead guitarist (and bluegrass banjoist) and his pickin' pals--guitarist and lead singer Peter Rowan, mandolinist David Grisman, fiddler Vassar Clements, and bassist John Kahn--broke musical (as well as cultural) boundaries.
